F. Chopin – Prelude in E minor, Op. 28 No. 4 “Suffocation” | Ceballos
This Prelude in E minor, often called “Suffocation”, summons a stifling, solitary sadness. From the deepest corners of the soul, Chopin reveals in this brief work the tuberculosis consuming him, intertwined with his storm-ridden bond with Aurore Dupin (George Sand). The chords fall like a slow chromatic collapse. The melodic upper line is perceived as a fragile, tense thread, always on the verge of snapping, while a cry of despair erupts in the middle of the piece. Composed in 1838 in Valldemossa, Mallorca, this prelude belongs to the celebrated cycle of the 24 Preludes op.28, where Chopin gives voice to an intimate and painful confession.

J. S. Bach - “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”, arr. by Myra Hess | Ceballos
Bach’s “Jesus bleibet meine Freude” is one of those pieces that feels everlasting and hopeful. It originally appeared as the final movement of his 1723 cantata “Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben” (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life), BWV 147, written for voices and orchestra. Though composed for choir, it’s now played in many arrangements including this version for solo piano by Myra Hess, which masterfully brings out a timeless sense of pulse and beautifully woven inner voices.
